McNamara Academic Center – Learning Support

Coordinators of Learning Services are full-time professional McNamara Academic Center staff who design and implement the learning support programs, including supervised study, mentor-tutoring, and subject tutoring. These experienced teachers are available to help all student-athletes with learning issues, study or academic skills, or specific coursework. They also provide referrals to other campus learning resources. They are available by appointment or on a walk-in basis.

Writing Consultants from the University of Minnesota's Student Writing Support program are available to help students with the process of writing. They are available on a walk-in basis from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sundays through Wednesdays.

Subject Area Tutors work with individuals and small groups to help students with course content. Tutors may be assigned specific times and days to work with groups for the most common first-year courses, especially math and science. They are also available by appointment.

Mentor Tutors are responsible for working with student-athletes one-on-one in small group settings. They are also responsible for reporting student-athletes' progress to the Coordinators of Learning Services and other parties within the McNamara Academic Center.

Tutorial Services

If you anticipate problems in a course, actually experience trouble, or wish to achieve mastery of course material, we encourage you to work with a Subject Tutor.

  • Student-athletes are responsible to work with the Learning Center Staff and with their Academic Counselor to arrange one-on-one or small group tutoring.
  • Drop-in Group Tutoring is available for common first-year classes (math, sciences, social sciences) and are scheduled in the MAC Learning Center during evening hours. A Drop-in Tutor Schedule appears on the MAC website early each term.

If you have a concern about the ability of the tutor assigned you or if you are unable to work with a given tutor, contact a Coordinator of Learning Services or your Academic Counselor to discuss the situation.

How to Find a Tutor

Please note: Student-athletes may work only with tutors in the MAC Learning Center and only during supervised hours. You may not hire your own tutors or use tutors who have not been hired by the MAC.

  • Stop by a Coordinator of Learning Services’ office and discuss what subject you need a tutor and when you are available to meet with them. The Coordinator of Learning Services will find a qualified tutor and setup the meeting times and location for you.
  • Fill out the ‘Request a Tutor’ form on the MAC webpage. A Coordinator of Learning Services will find a qualified tutor and setup the meeting times and location for you.
  • Check the MAC webpage and/or signs in the Learning Center to see when Drop-In Tutoring Sessions or Study Groups have been scheduled for your class. (Posted study groups are open to any student-athlete taking the class.) Groups are commonly scheduled Sunday – Thursday, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
  • For writing help, you should see a Coordinator of Learning Services (during walk-in hours, during evening study, or by appointment) or a writing tutor (see postings for evening hours).

Hints: Plan ahead and act quickly. Good tutors "book up" early in the term. Use tutors to help prevent problems. Tutors add to what you have learned from class and your reading; they do not replace either of those activities and cannot teach you the entire course.

How to Cancel Tutor Appointments

Students who must cancel a tutoring appointment should contact the Coordinator of Learning Services at least 4 hours before the scheduled appointment time.

Groups: Attendance at group tutorials is optional for most students. Those students required to attend group tutoring by their MAC Academic Counselor or Coordinator of Learning Services must call the MAC front desk (625-6888) at least 4 hours before the session is scheduled to begin and ask that the Counselor or Coordinator be notified.

Failure to contact the Coordinator of Learning Services at least 4 hours before the scheduled appointment will result in a "no show" being recorded. Emergencies do arise which prevent early notification.
